10-го сентября 1883 Многоуважаемый друг Эдуард Францович! Судя по тону Вашего письма, Вы как будто на меня сердитесь. Это мне неприятно. Я был далёк от мысли чем-нибудь раздражить Вас, и если это случилось, то, вероятно, потому, что второпях я не так выразил свои мысли и чувства, как хотел. Сомневаться в том, что Вы желаете мне добра, мне никогда и на ум не приходило. Все недоразумение состоит в том, что я воображал труппу гораздо богаче, чем в действительности. Основная мысль моя была следующая: оперы мои (недостатки коих очень сознаю, и даже сильнее, чем кто-либо) нуждаются в хороших певцах и опытных артистах, и если их налицо нет, то лучше, чтобы они ждали в моем портфеле, пока подходящие исполнители явятся. Идеалов не ищу, ибо знаю, что их нет. Если бы для партии Андрея, Марии и матери были такие артисты, как Мельников, Прянишников и Стравинский, — то я был бы вполне счастлив, хотя названные артисты не суть идеалы. Из письма Вашего вижу, что уже хоры разучиваются, значит, вероятно, приступлено и к приготовлению постановки, поэтому нечего и думать об оставлении «Мазепы» на будущее. 10th September 1883 Most respected friend Eduard Frantsovich! Judging from the tone of your letter, you seem to be angry with me. This is unpleasant for me. Any thoughts of annoying you were far from my mind, and if this is the case then it's probably because, through rushing, I did not express my thoughts and feelings as I would have wished. It has never crossed my mind to doubt that you wish me well. This whole misunderstanding has come about because I imagined the company to be far richer than it actually is. The basis for my thinking is as follows: my opera (whose limitations I'm all too aware of, more so than anyone else) requires fine singers and experienced artists, and if these are unavailable, then it's better to keep it in my portfolio until suitable performers appear. I'm not looking for perfection, because I know this doesn't exist. If there were such artists for the parts of Andrey, Mariya and the mother as Melnikov, Pryanishnikov and Stravinsky — then I should be quite happy, even though the named artists are not ideal. I see from your letter that the chorus is already being trained, which probably means that preparations have already started for the production, and therefore there can be no thought of postponing "Mazepa" until the future. I shall write the distribution of roles according to your letter today. I ask you, dear friend, never to doubt the sincerity of my respect and friendship.
