9 ноября Посылаю контракт, хотя он совершенно излишний, ибо точно такой я уже подписал в Петербурге, в мае, чему свидетелем, был Осип Иванович, с которым мы вместе ходили в контору. Как глупо, что в правилах о поспектакльной плате нет примечания, что если трёхактная опера занимает весь вечер, то за неё получается столько же, сколько за четырёхтактную. Ведь «Мазепа» и «Евгений Онегин» не оттого в трёх актах, что они меньше других опер, а потому, что такого разделения потребовали художественные мотивы и сценические соображения. Надеюсь, что мне в виде лёгкого уклонения от правила будут выдавать не 8, а 10 процентов. Впрочем, я не решился вписать цифру процентов; пусть сами впишут, но прошу тебя, если можно, похлопотать. Помнишь ли, что когда Барцал просил «Мазепу», то я предупредил его, что хочу получать столько же, сколько полагается за 4-актную оперу. Впрочем, если они будут артачиться, то историй заводить не стоит. Ты мне пишешь, чтобы я приехал к 5 концерту, — но когда он будет, не пишешь. 9 November I'm sending you the contract, although it's utterly redundant, because I already signed one exactly the same in Petersburg, in May, when I went to the office with Osip Ivanovich, who acted as a witness. How stupid it is that the rules about performance fees do not stipulate that if a three-act opera takes up a whole evening then it receives the same amount as for a four-act one. After all, "Mazepa" and "Yevgeny Onegin" aren't in three acts because they are shorter than other operas, but because such a division was demanded for artistic reasons and staging considerations. I hope that they will make a slight exception to the rule, and give not 8, but rather 10 percent. Anyway, I didn't venture to put the percentage figure; let them put it in themselves, but I ask you to intervene in this, if possible. Do you remember that when Bartsal asked for "Mazepa" I warned him that I wanted to receive the same amount as I should for a 4-act opera? Anyway, if they quibble then it's not worth making a scene. You wrote that I should come to the 5th concert, but you didn't write when it will be. Naturally, I'm coming, because after all it was at my request that the 1st symphony is being played. Yours P. Tchaikovsky I have one debt to my brother Nikolay Ilyich that is weighing upon me terribly. On receiving the performance fee, kindly send him 500 rubles to Saint Petersburg, Sterligov's House, near the Torgovy Bridge.
