I went to my trunk today, in order to see whether Alyosha had packed 1) the proofs of the children's songs and 2) the corrections of the 1st symphony, which were done by Langer and Kashkin and which I meant to look through, but never did. I turned out that I had neither one nor the other, and I don't understand why Alyosha didn't pack them. I've just written him a letter, but I fear that he's already left for the country. In that case you won't be receiving the 1st symphony before March, because it's only then that Alyosha will be returning to Moscow. As for the children's songs, please have them reprinted, and hopefully I'll be able to entrust all the proofreading to Chrysander. It's only so far as the harmonization of the words with the music is concerned that it's necessary either to wait for me, or to turn to Taneyev, Laroche, Kashkin, etc.

Please, forgive the inexcusable absent-mindedness and negligence shown in this instance. I am extremely ashamed and annoyed with myself.

Yours P. Tchaikovsky
