Gracious friend!

I have just received my romances and am hastening to write you these lines in order to strenuously and earnestly request you to immediately sequester, i.e. to withdraw, the copies of these romances that have already been distributed, since they contain horrendous printing errors. Looking through them hurriedly I managed to see several musical and one textual error, sufficient to completely ruin the whole work. In the best romance (in my opinion), No. 5, on page 4, the word binge has been printed instead of the word reproach, which made me shudder.

I implore you to immediately sequester all copies and subject them to meticulous proofreading, which, if you wish, I shall take on myself. This will not cause you any loss worth talking about, and I will gladly take it upon myself. The fact is that I was very much counting on the success of No. 5, but any possibility of that has been destroyed by the word binge. For God's sake, take this seriously, no matter how petty* my reasons for causing me to ask you this may seem to be.

Yours, P. Tchaikovsky

Shilovsky has probably already delivered the arrangement of the entr'acte to you. Send the overture soon. I'll be sending the words for Basmanov's arioso in a day or two.

* The word binge distorts and simply caricatures the whole sense of the romance.
