Москва 1 мая Любезнейший Василий Васильевич! Насчёт симфонии я думаю, что самое лучшее будет, если я сам сделаю клавираусцут; но только теперь хорошо этим заняться я не могу, так как дела гибель и скоро предстоит отъезд. Ведь все равно Madame Корсакова протянула бы это дело до зимы! А впрочем, если она возьмётся, то я буду очень рад, так как она по этой части мастерица. Азанчевский пишет, что он желал бы иметь в своём распоряжении партитуру для приготовления к исполнению её в будущем сезоне. Пожалуйста, поговори с ним и спроси, когда она нужна. Во всяком случае, полагаю, что было бы отлично, если б партитура была переписана; это облегчило бы и тебя и меня, а то беспрестанно нужно будет ей переезжать из одной столицы в другую. Теперь же партитуру следует прислать немедля в Москву для концерта с велик[им] князем. Поездка в Петербург меня крайне смущает; она будет мне стоить и денег и времени. У меня есть черновой клавираусцуг, и я по нем отлично могу сообразить отдельные нумера и затем подробно отписать тебе об этом. Пожалуйста, постарайся освободить меня от этой поездки, хоть я и сам не мешало. Но мои планы так устроились, что поездка в Питер сильно их расстроила бы. О «Снегурочке» скажу тебе откровенно, что сначала я думал вовсе её не печатать. Потом в одно и то же время мне сделали предложение и ты и Юргенсон. Отношения мои к последнему таковы, что он на этот раз может сильно обидеться, если я ему эту музыку не отдам. Итак, послушаю, какова музыка, и если стоит печати, то должен буду отдать Юргенсону, а ты за это на меня, пожалуйста, не претендуй. За деньги очень, очень тебе благодарен; они будут способствовать к осуществлению давно желанного плана экскурсии по России и Европе. Твой, П. Чайковский В. В. Тимановой скажи при свидании, что ей напишу и пришлю карточку. Тебе тоже пришлю, когда будут готовы.

Regarding the symphony, I think that it would be better if I were do to the piano reduction myself; but I cannot do this well now, since I have so much to attend to, and my departure is imminent. After all, Madame Korsakova would have drawn the matter out until the winter! However, if she takes it on then I will be very glad, given her expertise in this area. Azanchevsky writes that he should like to have the score at his disposal to prepare for its performance next season. Please speak with him and ask when it is required. In any case, I dare say that it would be splendid if the full score were copied out; this would be simpler for both of us, otherwise it would need to be continually moved from one capital to the other. The score should now be immediately sent to Moscow for the concert with the Grand Duke. The trip to Petersburg is causing me the utmost dismay; it will cost me both money and time. I have the piano reduction ready in draft, and I can easily extract separate numbers from it and then write them out in detail for you. Please try to spare me from this trip, even though I won't prevent it myself. But my plans are such that a trip to Piter would greatly upset them. As for "The Snow Maiden", I will tell you frankly that at first I did not consider publishing it at all. Then, simultaneously, you and Jurgenson made offers to me. My relations with the latter are such that this time he would be highly offended if I did not give him this music. Therefore, I will listen to the music, and if it's worth printing I will have to give it to Jurgenson, so please do not have any pretensions towards it.
