Cher et très respecté

Dear and most respected
Ivan Aleksandrovich!

The orchestral musicians of the Bolshoi Theatre have approached me about securing the first performance of my opera as their benefit. Mr Maykov, with whom I spoke with on this matter, has categorically refused to give consideration to their request. This very important person did not deign to give me his reasons. Therefore I have resolved to do everything possible to convince the most influential personalities at the Imperial Theatres to take up their cause. I am starting with you; at the same time I have written to the minister, and have even ventured to address the Emperor himself. I must admit to you it is my fervent wish for the humble request of the orchestra's musicians to be taken into consideration, and that the privilege of the benefit be granted to them. Whereupon I urge you, Ivan Aleksandrovich, to do everything possible to support my request. Kindly explain to the Minister and, should the occasion arise, to His Majesty himself, that it is reasonable to give the benefit of a premiere of a new opera to those who have worked the hardest, and that is precisely the case here for the musicians, because the orchestration of my opera is infinitely difficult.

Now I have to talk to you about the about the projected ballet for the 1887–1888 season. I am starting to believe that I have shown great improvidence and an exaggerated belief in my creative powers by formally undertaking to do the music for this ballet. The point is that I am now wholly taken up with my opera "Cherevichki", for which I will be conducting the orchestra on its first performance. The rehearsals have lasted for 5 weeks during which I have had very little time to work on "The Enchantress", which I must present to the Petersburg Directorate before Lent. The rehearsals will recommence on 7 January. Towards the end of this month I shall be free and able to apply myself to the piano score of "The Enchantress". When this is done, it will be the turn of the orchestration, for which I will must sacrifice all my time for 3 or 4 months. I will have this completely ready around June. After all this I shall be very tired. I feel, indeed, I know, that I will need to regain my strength and revive myself with a long journey. Let us suppose, however, that in the space of two months (namely July and August) I manage to do "Undina". But then it must also be orchestrated. And just as I have the opportunity to set to work, the rehearsals for "The Enchantress" are scheduled to begin, and will last for one or perhaps two months.

I am not wanting in lack either the desire to make the music for "Undina", nor the desire to please you. But I still require sufficient time and sufficient strength to do it well, because this is not only a question of fashioning something like conventional ballet music; I am aiming for a masterpiece of its genre, and it is time in particular that I lack. I therefore urge you, most respected Director, to postpone the "Undina" project until the 1888-1889 season. I think that "The Enchantress" will require several months of work, and considering that I shall have to endure all the worries and emotions of two opera productions (here in January, and October in Petersburg, you will understand that I have overestimated my powers by promising you something that I will probably be unable to achieve. I must add that if you insist on holding me to my word, then I shall do it, but I cannot promise to do it well.

Whereupon, please allow me to offer you my warmest congratulations on the occasion of the festivities and for the New Year, and please be assured of the profound respect of your most devoted,

P. Tchaikovsky

P.S. The sets for the opera "Cherevichki" are magnificent. I am indebted to you and I thank you with all my heart. The first performance will take place on 15 January.
