Дрезден 20/8 февр[аля] Спасибо тебе за письма, милый Модя, не поверишь, как мне приятны письма, ибо я продолжаю неистово скучать. Дрезденом я очень недоволен. Ожидал встретить здесь такой же первоклассный оркестр, как было в Кёльне и Франкфурте, — но очень ошибся. Оркестр здесь маленький и скверный, и на репетициях, коих было три, я совсем измучился. Концерт состоится через 2 часа, и я оставлю место в конце письма, чтобы сообщить, как он сошёл. Посылаю тебе вырезки из франкфуртских газет, сегодня мне присланных. Ходил сегодня смотреть на Мадонну. И она, и галерея произвели на меня гораздо более сильное впечатление, чем прежде. Я начинаю подумывать, не бросить ли мне все и ехать домой; да, наверное, так бы и сделал, если бы не Сапельников, который, пожалуй, без меня не поедет в Лондон. Завтра еду в Берлин. 21/9 февр[аля] Очень волновался и дирижировал плохо. Dresden 20/8 February Thank you for the letters [1], dear Modya, you would not believe how welcome letters are to me, because I continue to be fiercely homesick. I'm most displeased with Dresden. I expected to meet the same first-class orchestra here as I had in Cologne and Frankfurt — but I was very much mistaken. The orchestra here is small and bad, at and all three rehearsals I was completely exhausted. I'm sending you clippings from the Frankfurt papers, which I received today [2]. I went for a walk today to see the Madonna [3]. Both she and the gallery produced a far stronger effect on me than before. I started to wonder whether I shouldn't abandon everything and go home; indeed, I probably should have done so, were it not for Sapelnikov, who I suppose wouldn't go to London without me. Tomorrow I'm off to Berlin. 21/9 February I was very agitated and conducted poorly [4]. The audience liked the symphony's first movement a little, the andante more so, the scherzo even more, and the finale afterwards was genuinely successful; the musicians played a flourish. There was a dinner with speeches. I'm terribly homesick. |
