Очень благодарен Вам за милое письмо. Знаете ли, что я просто преклоняюсь и благоговею перед Вашей благородной артистическою скромностью и изумительно сильным характером! Все эти бесчисленные контрапункты, которые Вы проделали, эти 60 фуг и множество других музыкальных хитростей, — все это такой подвиг для человека, уже 8 лет тому назад написавшего «Садко»,-что мне хотелось бы прокричать о нем целому миру. Я прихожу в изумление и не знаю, как выразить моё бесконечное уважение к Вашей артистической личности. Как я мелок, жалок, самодовольно наивен кажусь себе, когда сравниваю себя с Вами! Я чисто ремесленник в композиции, Вы будете артист, художник в самом полном смысле слова. Надеюсь, что Вы не примете этих слов за желание сказать Вам любезность. Я в самом деле убеждён, что при Вашем громадном даровании в соединении с тою идеальною добросовестностью с которою Вы относитесь к делу, — из-под пера Вашего должны выйти сочинения, которые далеко оставят за собой все, что до сих пор было написано в России. С величайшим нетерпением буду ожидать присылки Ваших 10-ти фуг. Вряд ли мне скоро придётся быть в Питере, и я попрошу Вас в возможно скором времени обрадовать меня Вашими фугами, — они меня донельзя интересуют. Тщательна их просмотревши, я напишу Вам подробно своё мнение. Я провёл лета в различных губерниях у друзей и родных. Работал довольно усидчиво и, кроме симфонии, написал (в проекте) два действия балета. По приглашению московской дирекции я пишу музыку к балету «Озера лебедей». Я взялся за этот труд отчасти ради денег, в которых нуждаюсь, отчасти потому, что мне давно хотелось попробовать себя в этого рода музыке. Мне очень любопытно знать, как будет происходить обсуждение достоинств присланных на конкурс партитур. Надеюсь, что Вы будете в числе членов комитета? Страх осрамиться, т. е. не получить премии и вследствие того лишиться шансов на постановку моего «Вакулы», которой я пламенно желаю, — очень меня терзает. Об «Анжело» здесь ходят самые разноречивые слухи. Года два тому назад Кюи играл мне 1-ый акт, произведший на меня впечатление весьма несимпатичное, особенно взяв в сравнение «Радклифа», которого я страх как люблю. Непременно поеду на первое представление. Симфония Ваша будет Вам в скором времени выслана. Moscow 10 September 1875 Most kind Nikolay Andreyevich!
I am very grateful to you for your dear letter. Do you know that I simply worship and revere your noble artistic modesty and strikingly strong character! All those innumerable studies in counterpoint which you have done, those 60 fugues and a multitude of other musical subtleties — all of this is such a feat for the person who already 8 years ago wrote "Sadko" — that I want to shout about it to the whole world. I am amazed and do not know how to express my endless respect for your artistic individuality. How small, pitiful and smugly naïve I feel myself to be when I compare myself with you! I am purely a craftsman of composition, you will be an expert, an artist in the fullest sense of the word. I hope that you do not take these words as a wish to pay you a compliment. I really am convinced that your enormous talent combined with that ideal conscientiousness with which you approach your work must bring forth from your pen compositions that leave far behind them everything that has been written in Russia until now. I will await the dispatch of your 10 fugues with the greatest impatience. It is unlikely that I will be in Piter soon, and I beg you to give me the pleasure of your fugues as soon as possible – I am extremely interested in them. Once I have looked through them carefully, I will write you my opinion in detail. I spent the summer in various provinces staying with friends and relatives. I worked rather diligently and, apart from the symphony [1], I wrote (in outline) two acts of a ballet. At the behest of the Moscow Directorate, I am writing the music for the ballet "The Lake of Swans" [2]. I took this work on partly for the money, which I need, and partly because I have long wanted to try my hand at writing this type of music. I am very interested in knowing how the discussion of the merits of the scores submitted to the competition will proceed [3]. I hope that you will be among the members of the committee? It would be terrible to bring shame on myself, i.e., not receive the prize and as a result be deprived of the chance of seeing my "Vakula" produced, which I wish for fervently – this torments me greatly. The most contradictory rumours are circulating here about "Angelo" [4]. About two years ago Cui played me the 1st act, which made a very unfavourable impression on me, particularly taken in comparison with "Ratcliffe" [5], which I love very much. I will certainly go to the first performance. Your symphony will be sent to you very soon [6]. - ↑ The ballet Swan Lake (originally entitled The Lake of Swans) was commissioned from Tchaikovsky by the Directorate of the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow during the spring of 1875.
- ↑ The initiative for Tchaikovsky's opera Vakula the Smith was a competition organised by the directorate of the Russian Musical Society, to produce an opera on the subject of Nikolay Gogol's Christmas Eve. According to the rules of the competition (of which Rimsky-Korsakov was a member of the judging panel), all entries had to be submitted anonymously, and Tchaikovsky submitted his opera to the competition in the summer of 1875, under the Latin motto Ars longa, vita brevis ["Art is long, life is short"].
