11 ноября 1891 г[ода] Милый друг Володя! Насчёт костюмов и декорации «Пиковой дамы» я уже давно писал и телеграфировал В. П. Погожеву и получил ответ, что все послано. Mise en scène я тоже отправил давно и решительно не понимаю, почему все это не дошло. Впрочем, я, должно быть от усталости, до такой степени ко всему этому равнодушен, что не хочу и беспокоиться. Даже рад был бы, если бы что-либо помешало «Пиковой даме» появиться в Праге в этом сезоне. Мне теперь нужен покой, одиночество, и без холодного пота о каком-либо передвижении думать не могу. Мне ужасно, ужасно жаль бедного твоего отца. Конечно, я убеждён, что никакой опасности нет, — но ты пишешь, что он очень страдает, от желудка и слабости, и это вызывает жалость мою в самой сильной степени. Притом же он должен тяготиться мыслью, что выздоровление потребует продолжительного бездействия. Скажи папе, что его чудесная фантазия прошла в концерте отлично и вызвала бурный успех. Мы с Зилоти позволили себе одно маленькое изменение в нюансах, т. е. имели дерзость вместо f сыграть одно место pp, и это вышло так хорошо, что я не раскаиваюсь нисколько и думаю, что папа не рассердится за это. Вся фантазия прелестна, но первая половина особенно мне нравится; она удивительно удалась ему. Концерт этот вообще очень удался, — но моя баллада «Воевода» оказалась такой пакостью, что я на другой день после концерта разодрал её на клочки. Она более не существует. «Пиковая дама» прошла очень хорошо. Альтани, бывший в прошлом году на генеральной репетиции в Питере, хотел не ударить лицом в грязь в отношении ансамбля и тонкостей оркестрового исполнения, очень постарался, и результат вышел весьма успешный. Из отдельных исполнителей лучше всех была Сионицкая. Постановка для Москвы небывало роскошная, — но беднее петербургской. Я только что вернулся в Майданово, ещё не успел прийти в себя от суеты московской, и потому прости, что пишу как-то безалаберно. Родителям передай массу нежностей, а также сёстрам и Коте. Твой П. 11 November 1891 Dear friend Volodya! Regarding the costumes and scenery for "The Queen of Spades", I had already written and telegraphed V. P. Pogozhev ages ago, and received a reply that everything had been sent. I also sent off the Mise en scène ages ago, and I absolutely cannot understand why all this has not arrived. Anyway, probably due to fatigue, I am so indifferent to all this that I do not want to worry. I should even be glad if something prevented The Queen of Spades from appearing in Prague this season. Now I require peace and solitude, and I cannot think about going anywhere without breaking into a cold sweat. I feel awfully, awfully sorry for your poor father. Of course, I am convinced that he is no danger — but you write that he suffers greatly, from his stomach and weakness, and this arouses my pity to the utmost degree. Furthermore, he must be weighed down by the thought that recovery will require prolonged inactivity. Tell your father that his wonderful fantasia went off splendidly in the concert and was a great success. Ziloti and I allowed ourselves one small change of nuance, i.e. we had the audacity to play pp in one place instead of f, and it turned out so well that I do not regret it in the least, and I do not think that your father will be angry about this. The whole fantasia is lovely, but I particularly like the first half; he pulled this off astonishingly well. This concert was a success in general — but my ballad "Voyevoda" turned out to be such rubbish that the day after the concerts I tore it to shreds. It no longer exists. "The Queen of Spades" went very well. Altani, who was at the dress rehearsal in Piter last year, wanting to avoid losing face in terms of the ensemble and the subtleties of the orchestra, tried very hard, and the result was highly successful. Amongst the individual performers, Sionitskaya was the best. The production was unusually luxurious for Moscow — but poorer than in Petersburg. I have only just returned to Maydanovo, not yet having managed to recover from the bustle of Moscow, and so forgive me for writing rather carelessly. Give lots of tender greetings to your parents, as well as to your sisters and Kotya. Yours P. Tchaikovsky
