Я так сегодня смеялся над переводом «Verlorenes Paradies», что, я думаю, в Майданове было слышно. Конечно, теперь уже дела не поправишь, но нельзя ли хоть в голосах сделать исправления? Г[оспо]же Давидовой лучше бы вязать чулки, чем браться за литературные труды. Беру наудачу несколько примеров.

1) «Du ewig allgewalt'ger».

5) «Unbesiegbar für immer ist uns der Himmel».

I laughed so hard today at the translation of "Verlorenes Paradies" that I thought they could hear me in Maydanovo. Of course, it's already too late to tinker with it, but is it at least possible to make corrections in the parts? Mrs Davydova would be better off knitting stockings than taking on works of literature. Taking some examples at random.

1) «Du ewig allgewalt'ger». Translation: "oh almighty, pre-eternal". The word pre-eternal doesn't exist, but there is a word "everlasting", which is used in reference to God. Davidikha heard the sound, but didn't know what it was. It might be said that amongst God's creatures Davidikha is an pre-awful translator, but one cannot say that she as a creature is pre-mortal; the particle "pre" before the words eternal or "eternal" or "mortal" makes no sense.

2) In No. 2, God, referring to the heavenly spirits, says: ""I have summoned you to perform every act!" («Ihr seid gekommen mir zu dienen mit eurer gläubig heil'ge Stärke»). Surely performing every act would include crimes, adultery, etc.!!!!!

3) On page 24 the German choir sings: «Hinan, hinan!», i.e. referring to God in heaven.Davidikha's Russian choir sings "up, up"!! So this is what a choir of your engravers might sing when they come to you for their salary: "up, up!". Since this is a fugue, the audience will be very amused to hear up! repeated a thousand times!

4) On page 67 the Devil calls out in the night and says: «Schaurig walle heran, Mutter der Sünde, o Nacht». Davidikha translates it thus: "mother of all vices, o night!". Yet everyone knows that the mother of all vices is sloth, but hardly at night. Since when did vices come from from the night?? No, this is too silly!

5) «Unbesiegbar für immer ist uns der Himmel». In the translation: "the kingdom of heaven is impregnable to us". The word impregnable is used exclusively when applied to a fortress, and the dative case is utterly meaningless here! Just suppose that Anton Grigoryevich would have tried unsuccessfully to employ Madame Davydov. Could he have said later "Davidikha is impregnable to me"? Even though he's bad with the Russian language, he wouldn't have uttered such an absolutely impossible Russian phrase.

6) The German text on page 68: «Und du, reizend fürchterliches Weib, eine Schlange um den Leib, mit giftigem Zauberfachel». In the translation: "And you are a terribly beautiful wife, with a snake wrapped around your figure, and with sweet poison in your sting". It turns out that the sting isn't the snake's, but the wife's, and this wife is a sin!!!

God knows what this is!

7) On page 96, God, creating heaven, says: "let the firmament of heaven arise like a cupola over the world!.

Presumably Cologne and other cathedrals, including the Cathedral of the Saviour, existed even before the creation of the world, and God imitated the work of human hands far earlier than he created Adam.

I've only just begun browsing through "Paradise Lost" and have found so many delights. What will be next!

But then, the edition is very good, and the title page is perhaps the most elegant of all your title pages There are almost no printing errors. Who did the proofreading?

Well, that's quite enough to bother you with. Time for bed!

Yours, P. Tchaikovsky

Pollini is begging me to go to Hamburg for 8th September when "Iolanta" is back on, and to discuss the production of "The Queen of Spades". I don't know whether to go or not.
