Notes and References

  1. Tchaikovsky conducted Herman Laroche's overture Carmosine (Кармозина) at the first symphony concert of the Russian Musical Society in Saint Petersburg on 16/28 October 1893 (in a programme which also included the premiers of his own Symphony No. 6).
  2. This note, and the humorous attempt to write this letter in English, alludes to the fact that on 1/13 June 1893 Tchaikovsky had received an honorary doctorate of music at Cambridge University in England.
