Thursday
5/17 January 1878

Today I caught myself, almost without realising it, counting the days and hours we still have left to spend here. I just don't like San Remo, and that's that. Or have I reached the point where nowhere makes me happy, and I'll be waiting for something and striving to go somewhere for all eternity? Today we took rather a long walk along the seashore. The places were still excellent, but something's still irritating me all the same. It's simply horrible for me to go to the mountains after the incident with the old man I wrote to you about. But please don't conclude from this that I'm moping about. Not in the least. I've done a great deal today — in an hour and a half I orchestrated your favourite aria "Every age submits to love". It's remarkable that no-one has written anything to me. The same Kashkin, who says that he loves me very much, still hasn't replied to my long letter from Vienna. None of my Moscow friends, despite all my requests, have yet explained to me how my classes are going, and best of all, no-one has written a word to me about whether "Onegin" is going on! Meanwhile, Rubinstein even asked me for the opera and how I wanted to allocate the roles!

Modest and Kolya had a big scene just now. No matter how much Kolya asked to be forgiven, Modya remained steadfast. The boy went to his room and cried and whined in bed for ages, pleading for forgiveness. My heart was breaking. Finally he fell asleep. What is he dreaming now in his little head. Oh, what a pure innocent soul he has! What a wonderful nature. Having a child like that around makes me very happy. I kiss you.

6/18 January. Friday.

Tolya! I thought and thought whether or not to write to you about what happened, and in the end I decided I would write. It's strange somehow for me to keep anything from you. Just, please, don't be upset or angry with the guilty party in of today's unpleasantness — he acted in complete ignorance. Do you remember my suspicions about Alyosha in Venice? Modest became suspicious too. Despite strong protests, we all went together to see a doctor. While Modest set with the guilty party in the doctor's surgery, I anticipated the result with indescribable agitation. Finally they both emerged. I had a premonition of the truth. He has a venereal disease. I won't describe to you how I felt when the truth sank in. There was an awful scene at home. Considering that we have Kolya with us, I offered the guilty party two options: either go to Berlin for treatment under Kotek's supervision, or to Petersburg, under yours. There were tears, grief, despair. The doctor said there was no risk of becoming infected from him. However, we decided to all go together to Nice and arrange separate accommodation for him, but now we're wavering. We'll decide tomorrow. [...]

Saturday. 19/7 January 1878.

Today I learned that there was a Russian doctor here, and I decided to consult him. [...]

The doctor says that Alyosha will be cured much more quickly here, and therefore there's no reason to send him away. Having a Russian doctor is convenient because it's not necessary for us to accompany Alyosha, as well as the fact that he's undertaken to arrange everything in connection with his stay in hospital. This was all a great comfort to me. But naturally, our plans have fallen through. I'm obliged to stay here longer than I thought. What would I have done if Modest hadn't been here? I'd simply have gone out of my mind! But now, thanks to his presence, I'm calm. And if we have to stay here longer, then it's not the end of the world. Please, don't worry about me. I'm completely at ease, and I worked today as if nothing had happened. I've not received any letters for 5 days now. I kiss you gently and warmly, my dear fellow.

Yours P. Tchaikovsky

It goes without saying that Alyosha's illness is a secret.

Give dear Papa's hand a kiss from me. I hug Lili.
