Dear friend!

I've already known about your calamity for a while from the newspapers, and marvelled ay how your accounts are really so splendidly kept. Poor fellow! I am very, very upset by this unpleasantness. I should very much like to know how much of a loss you have suffered, and whether the figure of 4000 rubles that the newspapers talked about is exaggerated or an underestimate. I still haven't received a single note of "Onegin", but yesterday the receipt arrived, and I hope that today or tomorrow the package itself will appear.

At the beginning of August I shall send you 2305 silver rubles, probably by means of Alyosha. 2205 rubles from this comprise the amount I owe to Antonina Ivanovna, minus the money received from the sale, and kindly advance me (if possible) 100 rubles, sending her the 100 rubles immediately. I'm not sending you the money now, because I don't have it yet — but I can be quite certain that it will arrive in due course, and with the 100 rubles also kindly send her a letter that you will be receiving enclosed with it, and in which I have written her an account of everything she has received and might expect to receive.

I'm having a very pleasant time, and my heart is sinking painfully at the thought that 1st September isn't far away. I love Moscow and I love many people there, but... here follow a large number of assorted buts.

The courage and fortitude of spirit with which you have borne the calamity that has befallen you, increases still further my respect for you as a person, even though this was already great. Unfortunately, not having seen your new premises, I cannot imagine how and where this all happened. Was there really water in the store itself? I suppose that it was on a lower floor of some sort, where your editions were stored? Is that so? It seems to me that if perished music didn't include any foreign editions, then at least you have suffered less of a loss, and I take consolation that this was indeed the case.

Don't be put off by the fact that I'm at Verbovka, and don't assume that my address has changed. Write and send things to me at the old address.

I'm very heartily engaged in hunting. A wonderful pleasure.

Take note: I'm dedicating the concerto to Auer. I'm working little by little, i.e. rewriting various things I already composed during the winter and spring. Beware! You have the prospect of some respectable material to work on at Kolpashny Lane.

In no circumstances will I ask you to go to Antonina Ivanovna. Let her either come for the money herself, or you can entrust its delivery to an employee.

Farewell, dear friend!

Yours P. Tchaikovsky

Please, bow to Sofya Ivanovna and kiss the children.

Taneyev has finished the symphony and is sending it to you. He's expecting a fee of 100 rubles, and more than that is unnecessary.
