Nikolay Popov

Maternal great-uncle of the composer (b. 18/29 August 1779 in Saint Petersburg; d. 27 September/9 October 1869), born Nikolay Mikhaylovich Popov (Николай Михайлович Попов).

Nikolay was the eldest son of Mikhail Popov (1751–1792) and his wife Anna (b. Rykovskaya, ca. 1752–ca. 1783). In 1823 he married Anna Vilminovna Mertens (daughter of Vilmina Fyodorovich Mertens, a privy councillor), and they had six children: Aleksandr (b. 1824); Vladimir (b. 1826); Nadezhda (b. 1831); Nikolay (b. 1834); Kirill (b. 1835); and Yekaterina (b. 1837).

He was awarded the Order of Saint Vladimir (3rd and 4th Class) and Order of Saint Anne (2nd Class).

Nikolay Popov died on 27 September/9 October 1869, and was buried at the Smolenskoye Cemetery in Saint Petersburg.
