He studied at the Prague Organ School (1877–79), Academy of Fine Arts in Prague (1891–1893), the Académie Julian in Paris (1893–1895), and at the school of Anton Ažbe in Munich (1896–1904). He then devoted his life to painting and folk traditions, becoming a collector of folksongs, for which he received an honorary doctorate from Prague University in 1936, and was declared a National Artist in 1945.
