Golubchik Volodya! Forgive me for only writing a few words this time. I've just returned from a trip to Petersburg and on returning found such a pile of letters that I'm obliged to limit myself to brief replies. The principal motivation for my visit to Petersburg was to have a little fun and to listen to music, but I was most unsuccessful, because the programmes at both the "Aquarium" and at Pavlovsk were awful [1]. I heard a decent opera at the "Arkadia" [2], with the beautiful singer Deschamp [3]. They were doing "Mignon" [4], which I adore. Petersburg was festooned for the occasion of the visit of the German kaiser [5], and celebrations were in the air, but I found Peterhof particularly fascinating. Now I'm sitting down to work again, and will be staying put here for at least six weeks. I'm glad that you've seen Paris, even though it's less attractive in the summer [6]. On the other hand, Switzerland will afford you inexpressible delights. Keep letting me know about your experiences, golubchik.

I kiss your mama's hand firmly, and hug you tightly.

Yours P. Tchaikovsky
