Dear friend Nikolasha!

I think that you and Olya won't be uninterested to know about where and how I am. I left New York on 21/9 May, just on your nameday and birthday, and had a safe voyage for 7½ days to Hamburg. Only two days were bad, and one night in particular; for all the rest of the time the weather remained excellent. I stopped overnight in Hamburg and hurried to Petersburg via Berlin. I wanted terribly to be in my homeland as soon as possible. I've spent utterly pleasant 8 days in Piter. I'm only sorry that you weren't there. In general I was satisfied with my American tour, i.e. I'm pleased to recall my successes and the cordial reception I encountered everywhere. I am seriously considering going again, and it may well be that next year I go back to America, where this time it will be possible to earn a great deal of money. For now I've brought back very little, because I squandered too much. Today I've come here, to Maydanovo, in the same house where I lived previously. From tomorrow I'm going to start working industriously. At the end of the summer I'm certainly visiting Ukolovo. In 2 days' time Modest, Bob and Sanya Litke will be here for a little while. I've neither seen nor heard from Anatoly. I hug you tightly, kiss Olya's hands and smother dear Zhorzhika in my arms. Keep well!

Yours P. Tchaikovsky
