I'm writing hastily, and therefore with brevity. The journey was most comfortable. Seated alongside me were Karyakin and his wife, who both came to chat. In Moscow I was met by Alyosha. I stayed at the Loskutina. Soon Jurgenson came for lunch with me; after a while Rubinstein appeared, very gloomy and frustrated. He's been deeply offended by the newspapers' systematic attacks, and talk that he'll be leaving the Conservatory for good. I feel very sorry for him. At 5 o'clock I left after two hours' work on the proofs of the liturgy. Apropos of proofs. Your clever Akim had forgotten to pack the proofs of the 12 piano pieces in the suitcase. Please, my dear fellow, send them off immediately to Osip Ivanovich Jurgenson for forwarding to Pyotr Ivanovich. [...] I dropped in on Kondratyev, who was very astonished. At 10.30 we had supper at the Hermitage, which was attended by Rubinstein, Albrecht, Hubert, Kashkin, Jurgenson, Taneyev, Zverev. It was joyless — I don't understand why. Hearing the same old bawdy jokes again and again seemed less appealing to me on this occasion. However, we stayed until 3 o'clock, and I only came home at 4. It's now 8, and I'm already up and going to see Karlusha, who's about to guide me through the secret passages for rehearsals of a choral concert.

I ate at 1. I would be completely happy, were I not conflicted with the thought that you are sad and generally unhappy and dissatisfied with your life and circumstances. But another time. Until then I kiss you countless times. Kiss Modya and Papa, and bow to Volodya.

One more gentle hug.

P. Tchaikovsky
