17 окт[ября] 1891 г[ода] Милый друг Миша! Только что получил твоё письмо. Я не сокрушаюсь о неудаче твоих хлопот по устройству мне концерта, ибо оказывается, что, несмотря на страстное, для меня самого непостижимое стремление в Тифлис, — мне, к сожалению, невозможно будет там быть, по крайней мере зимой. Разве, может быть, весной удастся, если не поеду в Америку. Меня туда очень приглашают, но я заломил такой гонорар, какого мне, по всей вероятности, не дадут. Тогда весьма возможно, что я приеду погостить к вам. Повторяю, что для самого меня психологическая загадка, почему я в Тифлис, который тебе (и я это вполне понимаю) отошёл, так страстно и неудержимо стремлюсь. Казалось бы, что теперь, когда и Анатолия нет, и ты собираешься покинуть его, и золотой век тифлисской музыки прошёл, — мне бы и не думать о нем особенно много. А вот поди ж ты! Я все только о том и мечтаю, как бы пройтись по Лабораторной, зайти во время обеда, когда все в сборе, на угол Гудовичевской и Садовой к Зарудной и Ипполитову-Иванову, как бы провести вечерок в кружке с Кокодесом и т. д. и т. д. без конца. Я вполне сочувствую твоему желанию попасть куда-нибудь. в серьёзный музыкальный центр и одобряю твоё намерение ехать в Москву и Петербург. Не в одной, так в другой столице найдётся же тебе соответствующее положение. К сожалению, как раз в январе ты меня в Москве не застанешь. Я еду в Гамбург и Прагу на постановку моих опер («Онегин» в Гамбурге и «Дама» в Праге) и вернусь не ранее как к посту. Поэтому не придётся и «Азру» послушать. «Воеводу» я буду исполнять в Москве 6-го ноября на концерте Зилоти, а в Петербурге 14 декабря в Муз[ыкальном] общ[естве]. Квартет твой я советую дать на просмотр не Зилоти, который уезжает в скором времени за границу, да и к тому же уступает в серьёзности и придирчивости С. И. Танееву, — а сему последнему! Ручаюсь, что он охотно примет это на себя. Присылай скорее! Я еду на 3 недели в Москву по случаю «Пиковой дамы» и концерта, — и хорошо было бы, если бы он, т. е. квартет, пришёл, пока я там буду. Дорогой Варваре Михайловне скажи, что в скорости я ей напишу что-нибудь решительное по части её гастролей. Пока не мог добиться, чтобы обсудили и решили условия приглашения. Инструментую «Иоланду» («Дочь кор[оля] Рене») и прожил почти безвыходно все последнее время в деревне. Гостил у меня целый месяц Ларош. Передай самые нежные приветствия Варваре Михайловне, Анне Михайловне и Таточку поцелуй. Приезжал ли одесский Сарданапал? Не могу себе представить тебя без оперы, без суеты, сопряжённой с службой в театре. До свиданья, милый друг, если не на Севере, то весной у вас. Пиши от времени до времени о том, что вы делаете. П. 17 October 1891 Dear friend Misha! I have just received your letter. I do not regret the failure of your efforts to arrange a concert for me, because it turns out that, despite my passionate, unfathomable attraction to Tiflis, it will, alas, be impossible for me to be there, at least in the winter. Perhaps this will be possible in the spring, if I do not go to America. They are very keen for me to go there, but I have demanded such a fee that, in all probability, they will not pay it. Then it is quite possible that I shall come to visit you. I repeat that, for me, my passionately and irresistibly attraction for Tiflis is a psychological enigma, which (and I completely understand) has passed for you. You would think that now, with Anatoly gone, and you preparing to leave, the golden age of Tiflissian music having passed, I would not particularly give it much thought. But how about this! My only dream is of walking along the Laboratornaya at dinner time, when everyone has gathered, to the corner of Gudovichevskaya and Sadovaya to Zarudnaya and Ippolitov-Ivanov's, of spending an evening at the circle with Kokodes, etc. etc., endlessly. I fully sympathise with your desire to find yourself in a serious centre of music somewhere, and I approve of your intention to go to Moscow and Petersburg. If not in one capital, then in the other, you will find a suitable position. Unfortunately you will not catch me in Moscow in January. I am going to Hamburg and Prague for the staging of my operas ("Onegin" in Hamburg and "The Queen" in Prague), and shall not be returning until Lent. Therefore I shall be unable to hear "Azra". I shall be performing "The Voyevoda" in Moscow at Ziloti's concert on 6th November, and in Petersburg on 14 December at the Musical Society. I recommend that you give your quartet for review not to Ziloti, who is soon leaving for abroad, and besides is less serious and meticulous than S. I. Taneyev — but rather to the latter! I guarantee that he will gladly take it upon himself. Send it quickly! I am going to Moscow for 3 weeks for "The Queen of Spades" and the concert, and it would be good if it, i.e. the quartet, came while I am there. Tell dear Varvara Mikhaylovna that I shall soon write something decisive to her regarding her tour. I have been unable to discuss and decide on the terms of the invitation with them until now. I am scoring "Iolanta" ("King René's Daughter") and for quite a while now I have been living in the country almost without leaving. Laroche has been my guest for a whole month. Convey my most tender greetings to Varvara Mikhaylovna and Anna Mikhaylovna, and give Tatochka a kiss. Did Sardanapalus come to Odessa? I cannot imagine you without the opera, without the commotion associated with working in the theatre. Until we meet, dear friend, if not in the North, then at yours in the spring.
