Dear friend!

I have no objection to your publishing the Hopak separately. As for "The Battle of Poltava", then that would also be a good thing, but the difficulty here is that it was written for a civilian and military orchestra. Anyway, it's quite possible to rescore it for concerts so that the "Battle" can be performed by civilians alone. This is a straightforward task, and you might even entrust it to Büchner or someone like that; even graduates from the Conservatory such as Lyapunov, Klenovsky, Arends, etc. could do this. If you want me to do this myself then wait for my arrival — there's no point in sending the score here, besides which I'm busy with the suite and don't want to tear myself away. I think that the arrangement must be printed at the same time as the score — which is why I sent the first movement to Batalina; if she can finish the arrangement quickly then don't take the score away, otherwise I authorise you to remove the manuscript for a while. I'll arrange the other movements myself. However, I doubt that all this could be printed by November, and I'd rather not count on it. Please, write to Erdmannsdörfer that I absolutely consent to the suite being included in his concert. Bear in mind that to perform one number from the suite 4 accordions with 10 keys in the key of E major are required. I think the score could be printed from what you have, and it would do you no harm to prepare this, just in case. In a couple of weeks I'll send you the score of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th movements with the arrangements, and the rest a little later.

I'm thriving here, although after Podushkino the nature at Verbovka (my brother-in-law's estate near Kamenka is very pitiful. In the event of your sending registered letters, proofs and parcels, bear in mind that there is now a post office at Kamenka, to which they must be directly addressed, rather than to Smela. Until we meet.

Yours P. Tchaikovsky
