Leipzig  1 February

At long last, I've received a letter from you, golubchik Tolya! I'm very touchy about letters, and yet I need them terribly. I don't remember when I wrote to you last. I think it was from Hamburg. After that I was in Berlin (again fussing about the forthcoming concert there), I hid in Magdeburg for two days, and now I've been here for around a week. I had the idea of resting in Leipzig in the company of Ziloti and Brodsky, but that isn't what happened. I'm leading the most turbulent life, full of all sorts of commotion. That said, there are some pleasant moments flickering here and there amongst the endlessly agonising and tedious hours. I've heard lots of good music here, seen countless numbers of musicians, every day I'm a dinner guest, have supper in company, eat a lot, drink a lot, do next to nothing, and barely manage to find a moment to write letters. Ziloti and his wife and Brodsky with his charmingly wonderful wife and belle soeur (I've become great friends with them), the composer Grieg and his wife — these are al the people whom I see most often and who are my consolation. But even amongst the strangers there are very many nice people, and as regards the gentlemen who rate me highly as a musician, in this respect it's absolutely impossible to complain. I've found the most fervent admirers here. I'm going to Berlin tomorrow; the day after is the first rehearsal for the concerts on 8th/12th February. This will be very terrifying, but God willing it might just come off. From Berlin it's back here again: there's a gala concert of my works coming up on the 11th, with Ziloti conducting. On 12th February/31 January, I'm going to Prague. The concert there will take place on the 19th. From there it's straight to Paris, where there are concerts on 4th and 11th March. Then I still have London, and, perhaps Belgium. And then I dream of travelling to you by sea. Anyway, this is still a long way off!

My health is splendid; of course, sometimes nerves make themselves felt, and of course I'm sometimes overcome by sadness to the point of tears — but this is all trivial. I think that if, God willing, I can endure it all, the it can only beneficial for my health. The pianist Sapelnikov, who played with enormous success at my Hamburg concert, is travelling with me. I took him with me to Berlin and here in order to introduce him to various bigwigs. Now wait for my letter from Berlin, which will be very interesting. Until then, I kiss and hug your excellencies. I can imagine how important the general's wife is now.
