г[ород] Клин, Моск[овской] губ[ернии] Многоуважаемый Павел Михайлович! Письмо это конфиденциальное. В Петербурге слышал я, что Альтани покидает московскую оперу. Очень бы хотелось знать, правда ли это? Жаль очень и Альтани, если правда, что он не по своей воле уходит, но жаль и московскую оперу, которая лишается прекрасного, опытного капельмейстера, такого, на которого нашему брату положится можно, — а таких у нас до того мало, что кроме Направника и Альтанине знаю, кого и назвать. Как бы то ни было, но вопрос о замещении Альтани в случае, если он уйдёт, есть вопрос большой важности, и для меня он представляет жгучий интерес. Не будет ли с моей стороны неделикатно и неловко, если я попрошу Вас вкратце намекнуть, какое Вы предполагаете разрешение этого вопроса? Если да, то простите. Но, быть может, Вы найдёте небесполезным по душе побеседовать со мной по сему поводу? Как бы то ни было, но прошу Вас ответить мне несколько слов. Искренно преданный и уважающий Вас, П. Чайковский Р. S. Павел Михайлович! Я сильно дуюсь на Вас за окончательный провал «Чародейки». Не могу скрыть этого. Уезжая, я так просил отложить её до будущего сезона! Быть может, тогда все бы иначе было. Досадно!!!
