Modya! Nothing has changed since you left. I'm working increasingly hard, Manya is doing nothing. He's in particularly gloomy spirits; I've never seen him like this before. He seems to desperately want to work and to set to work on anything, but for the moment he cannot. All my efforts to persuade him to dictate, as previously, have not succeeded. My urging has twice resulted in tears and complete despair. If only someone out of the three of you could write me 2 words. However, I can't complain because I'm too lazy too write myself. I'm staying here for another week, then I'm off to Moscow. On 6th November there's a concert there, in which I'll be conducting "The Voyevoda". I won't be arriving in Petersburg until the concert there. So until we meet!
