13 марта [18]92 с[ело] Майданово Милый мой Саша! Ужасно рад был получить твоё милое письмо. Радуюсь от души твоим успехам. Ты пишешь, что, быть может, будешь играть на Musikfest'е в Вене. Не на том ли это, где я буду дирижировать? Недели 2 тому назад я получил приглашение дирижировать одним из Musikfest'ов. По зрелом размышлении я изъявил согласие и на вопрос, когда мне удобнее, отвечал, что в сентябре. При этом я выразил желание, чтобы в программу был включён мой 1-ый концерт, и спрашивал, могут ли пригласить для этого тебя или Сапельникова. Ответа ещё не получал, но, может быть, они вследствие моего письма обратились. Пишу это не для того, чтобы похвастать, что о тебе думаю, а чтобы изъявить радость, что будем в Вене вместе. Неужели ты серьёзно веришь, что Вольф подговаривал критиков тебя ругать? Что-то трудно допустить. Впрочем, черт с ним—он, во всяком случае, конечно, сукин сын, и если можно без него обойтись, то тем лучше. Недавно только вернулся из Петербурга. Играл там сюиту из балета. Кажется, удачно вышло, — не то, что пресловутый «Воевода». Вообще моя работа (инструментовка балета) так подвинулась, что надеюсь к пасхе кончить. С. И. Танеев будет делать переложение на 2 руки. По всей вероятности, весь апрель буду в Москве, где придётся, согласно обещанию, дирижировать несколько раз в Прянишниковской опере. В мае проживу, Бог даст, у себя на новом пепелище (я нанял дом в Клину), а в начале июня, кажется, поеду с Бобом в Виши. Значит, увижу тебя, если только вы на лето не поедете в Россию. Из Питера я ехал в одном вагоне с Павл[ом] Мих[aйловичем]. Он с большой нежностью и заботливостью говорил о вас обоих и выразил желание, чтобы летом жили у них. Что ты об этом думаешь? У меня гостил Володя Направник, а теперь гостит Саня Литке, племянник мой. Я в восторге от русской весны! Рад до смерти, что нахожусь не на чужбине в это чудное время года! Скажи Анне Ивановне, что портреты до сих пор не готовы; как только будут—пришлю. Крепко целую Верину ручку и тебя обнимаю. Белярам передай поклоны. Скоро в Париже будет Модест с Колей Конради. Твой, П. Чайковскин Celesta в сюите балета звучал превосходно. Слышал в Петербурге «Дон-Жуан» Направника (весьма почтенная вещь) и чудеса инструментовки в 3 действ[ии] «Млады» Р[имского]-Корсакова. 13 March 1892 Maydanovo village My dear Sasha! I was awfully glad to receive your nice letter. I rejoice at your success with all my heart. You write that you might be playing at the Musikfest in Vienna. Is this the one where I'll be conducting? About 2 weeks ago I received an invitation to conduct at one of the Musikfests. After mature reflection, I agreed, and when asked when would be more convenient for me, I replied in September. At the same time, I expressed a desire that my first concerto be included in the programme, and I asked if they could invite you or Sapelnikov for this. I've yet to receive an answer, but perhaps they contacted you as a result of your letter. I'm writing this not to boast that I'm think about you, but to express my joy that we'll be in Vienna together. Do you seriously believe that Wolff would have encouraged the critics to scold you? I find this hard to accept. Anyway, to hell with him — he's a son of a bitch in any case, and if you can manage without him, then so much the better. I've recently returned from Petersburg. I played the suite from the ballet there. It seems to have gone well — unlike the notorious "Voyevoda". Generally my work (scoring the ballet) has progressed to the extent that I hope to finish it by Easter. S. I. Taneyev will be making the arrangement for 2 hands. In all likelihood, I'll be in Moscow throughout April, where I have to fulfil my promise to conduct at Pryanishnikov's opera on several occasions. In May, God willing, I'll be living in a new place (I've rented a house in Klin), and in early June, it seems, I'll be going with Bob to Vichy. This means that I'll see you, unless you go to Russia in the summer. I travelled from Piter in the same carriage as Pavel Mikhaylovich. He spoke about you both with great affection and concern, and expressed a desire for you to live with them in the summer. What do you think about this? Volodya Nápravník visited me, and now Sanya Litke, my nephew, is visiting. I'm revelling in the Russian spring! I'm frightfully glad not to be in a foreign land at this wonderful time of year! Tell Anna Ivanovna the portraits are still not ready; as soon as they are, I'll send them. I kiss Vera's hand hard and embrace you. Give my regards to the Beliards. In Petersburg I heard Nápravník's "Don Juan" (a very respectable thing), and the wonders of instrumentation in the 3rd act of Rimsky-Korsakov's "Mlada".
