2 January 1890 Believe it or not I was in an incredible muddle when I asked if you could spare a little time for me this evening. It turns out that long ago I'd promised to spend the evening with my older brother [1], and offence will be taken if I don't. So here's an idea: shall we all come together on Wednesday at Palkin's [2] after the ballet performance?!![3] It will be very, very nice to dispose of a good bottle of wine with my dear friends. Please forgive me, golubchik, and do not refuse. I'll be bringing along some Muscovites as well (Ziloti, Kashkin). I won't have the opportunity to call on you either today or tomorrow. I'm saving a place for you; you'll be seated next to Lyadov [4]. I embrace you. P. Tchaikovsky |
